WYLD Youth Team

The WYLD team is made up of young people aged between 12 and 25 years, who are dedicated, passionate and committed to making the Wheatbelt a better place in which to live and grow. They are an informal sub-group of RDA Wheatbelt Inc, with an aim to assist in the development of individual communities, as well as the Wheatbelt region as a whole.

The WYLD team currently has representatives from a number of Wheatbelt communities, aiming to have at least 2 young representatives from each of the 43 shires within the Wheatbelt region. This will ensure the group is representative of our large and diverse region and well placed to gather the views of young people, while working to identify, reflect on and address local issues and work towards solutions.
Initiatives such as WYLD provide young people with the opportunity to develop skills and build capacity to make a valued contribution to their own community and region. WYLD provides a forum for young people to unify, discuss common issues and problems, and be proactive about identifying viable solutions to make a real difference.

Already the team has achieved a great deal, delivering a number of successful projects.  “Movies on the Move” project involved travelling to several towns across the region and working with local young people to develop their event planning and management skills culminating in a movie night in their community; and the creation of a “Roadworx” commercial whereby the team planned, directed, acted, filmed and edited a road safety commercial which was aired on WIN TV for a number of months. This commercial was very successful and the team was presented with an ‘Outstanding’ award by the Road Safety Council.
WYLD is currently working on a Magazine (WYLD Experience) to promote the Wheatbelt as a great place to live. ‘WYLD Experience’ will showcase both community and youth initiatives and achievements.

These achievements reflect positively on the way young people are viewed within their communities. By growing the WYLD team, Wheatbelt communities’ views and needs will be better represented thus creating greater opportunities for the future of the region and its youth.
